Windows 95 Startup Problems and Error Messages
Last updated: 7/20/01

Q.  When I boot up, the Win 95 screen comes up, then goes black and the message "Windows protection error.. re-start your computer."  Where can I find information on fixing this problem?

A.  Windows protection errors are usually caused by a hardware problem, but not always.  Leading causes are bad memory, IRQ conflicts, and motherboard problems.  Click here for Microsoft's Knowledgebase article on troubleshooting Windows 95 Startup Problems and Error Messages.
