Simple Windows Question
preston181 Oct-24-01 03:11 AM
Here's a question about something that has always bothered me:
When you buy a new computer with Windows already installed, where are your Windows disks, or are the Recovery disks your Windows disks? I'm thinking about doing a new install of my Windows to clear problems I've had, so this is pretty important to know.

Windows should be on the Recovery or separate Windows CD that came with the computer. The installation files also be on the hard disk. The most common locations for them are:
Win 9x C:\>\windows\options\cabs
Win Me C:\>\windows\options\install
Files in any subdirectories off these directories are not normally required to do a Windows install. The installation files can be copied to another hard disk, another partition on the same hard disk, or to a CD with a CD-RW drive and then installed from the DOS prompt with the setup command per procedures similar to those found at http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/upgrade/intro.htm. The windows product key for Windows 9X/Me can be determined with http://duxcw.com/faq/win/prodkey.htm. Larry
