Desktop Disappeared
Jeff B Jan-06-01 02:58 PM
I have a computer running Windows Me that boots fine until it gets to the desktop. When it gets to the desktop there is nothing there except the default blue background. There are no icons or taskbar on the screen. I tried clicking on the screen to see if anything would start but there was nothing.
There was a Norton zip recovery disk that I loaded and was able to get the desktop that way with limited usability.
I boot to Dos and it looks like all directories and files are intact. Does anyone have any ideas on what is missing or not being loaded at startup?

What happens if you Boot-up in the Windows Safe Mode (hold the Ctrl key as Windows boots-upů)? Larry

Try restoring the System Files to a previous known good state (Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, System Information, Tools, System Restore). This procedure should not affect My Documents, etc. Larry

I tried to do that and when I clicked on System Information the curser starts to work (hour glass)and then it puts me back at the blank desktop.
I started the machine with the Norton Zip Recovery Disk and then I reinstalled Windows Me. It went through the entire installation, took about 45 min. and I'm thinking that it restored any files that were missing. Well, I thought wrong. There was no change at all. Booted to a blank desktop.

I think you are stuck to take the hard disk down to bare metal and do a clean install of Windows. I normally bakup My Documents, C:\windows\favorites, C:\windows\cookies, C:\windows\.*pwl, and a few other things, including mail boxes; do a clean install (http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/winme/install/inst.html), and then reinstall all apllications, etc. Larry

I was afraid you were going to say that, but not suprised. This is my brother in-laws machine and I think one of the kids went in a did some damage.
Thanks for your help and I'll keep you posted.
