My CD Rom plays a music CD perfectly, but I can't get it to read any data CDs. I tried to install a program and Windows 95 gives me the old "device not ready" alert box. I have removed the CD Rom from the device manager and let Win 95 re-install it. I also checked the device manager and it says the device is working properly, there are no yellow exclamation marks pictured. I used the "eject" command and that works (the tray opens), so there has to be communication between the drive and windows. Any Help?

Try editing the C:\autoexec.bat file with notepad and remove the rem plus the space in front of the line with mscdex.exe, and reboot. Larry

Replace the data-cable.
The ribbon cable could be partially defective.
If there is only ONE lead in the cable who does not make contact to the interface or has been broken, the DATA cannot be read.
Audio is transported through the thin wire to your soundcard.
Commands are given through differend leads in the ribbon cable then then where the data is read through.
