Ram issues w/ a compaq
Scatter00x Jul-18-02 01:39 PM
I have a compaq pressario 5000 series computer, 1ghz p3 processor. I have recently tried to upgrade it w/ two 256 pc 133 sticks of ram. Previously there was only one 128 pc100 stick in there. It doesn't work with the two new sticks. What's wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help!

pressario 5000 series computer consists of 21 models of computers plus some sub models. Which one do you have? Larry

Beats me, I looked through all the documentation and couldn't find anything... I did check compaqs website, and every 5000 series shoud be able to take that ram. But all the computer has on it is 5000 on the front, and the doccumentation is generic to all 5000 series computers. Cheap mass production. =)

Did you try just one stick?

Yah i did, that didn't work either. the old one by it self works fine, the old one and a new one together it will boot, but it still wont recognize the new ram, and with just one, or both new sticks in it won't even boot.

Compaq often puts a sticker on the bottom side of the tower with all the motherboard specs for that particular unit. Sometimes they put the sticker inside the case cover.

Most PC133 has a feature called SPD -- Serial Presence Detect. In some CMOS setups, you may need to change the default BIOS settings to recognize SPD if you want to run PC133 in a PC100 slot. Getting into Compaq CMOS setup can be a bit tricky.

Is it possible to test with a stick of PC100 instead of PC133?? Even if you get the PC133 to work, it's probably only going to run at PC100 anyway. What are the BIOS settings for your CPU bus speed?

From what it seems, it isn't worth the time or effort to try to get this to work, so I'm gonna live with what I have and return the new stuff. Thanks anyways for all your help.
