Instaling Memory
HoDog14 Apr-16-02 03:52 PM
I know that you must ground yourself whn handline your memory, but i thought that just by touching the back of the casing would do this for me. I was trying to practice installing memory on an old pentium 1 and odviously, i messed up. The computer started to beep when i turned it on. Before this it worked fine. Its not really a big deal since im hrowing that computer out anyway, but is there any real safe way, step by step procedure, that will insure that i dont do this when i try to install DDR memory in my new computer. What is a fail-safe method, including my invironment and actually how delicate is memory?

I actually think you didn't have the memory seated all the way, but for your answer look at http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/buildcom/athlon/ath_3.htm

Also... The beeping may be your display adapter or not properly seated memory. You would be surprised how many display adapters get unseated when memory is installed, and vice versa. Also, seating memory in older computers may be somewhat an art. If it beeps, do it again. Rarely, but sometimes the old eraser trick helps. Clean the gold or tin contacts on the memory module with an ordinary pencil eraser. Larry

Yeah Larry I forgot all about that pesky display adapter, I guess I have just been lucky ... I can't tell you how many pcs I have built on my living room floor and never had a problem. I sure hope my luck dont run out <knocks on wood>.

I can. My/our last one was number 1,832. I've seen plenty of problems. Larry
