I don’t use scripts with FrontPage per se. The ones I use are set-up separately and run on the server. The two CGI programs (http://hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/cgi/intro.html ) I run, the Forum (see http://duxcw.com/digest/Reviews/Software/forum/dcforum.htm for more info) and search engine, are written in Perl and C. The search engine is htsearch which uses a database generated by a program called htdig. More info on these is at http://www.htdig.org/. I‘ll say that htdig requires a good knowledge of UNIX to install and that it took me the best part of week end to get it going. Likewise, dcforum was a bit of a challenge, but easier than htsearch/dig to install. If the FrontPage extensions are installed and you publish to a directory with a script, FrontPage can automatically alter the file permissions of the files used by the scripts and cause them to crash. I prevent this by making sub webs with the same names as the directories that the scripts are in both the local and remote copies of the web and not publishing to them. Larry

Hi Larry

OK i got a search script that i need to install, but i need to have perl on the server on on my pc, i cant be sure. How does one actually install a script? I checked on my web and the only directory i have is cgi-bin and not usr/.../perl.

Does something have to be installed?

Thank You

There are no hard and fast rules for running cgi scripts. First, find out if you have an account that permits running custom cgi scripts and check your hosting services help and policy pages for details. I’ll tell you that I have spent a lot of time installing the scripts on my site and that I do not have that kind of time available for doing it on another system as a free service. I'll try to answer your questions, but installing a search engine can be a weekend’s worth of work. I hope you understand. Larry
