Direct X problem
pikachu Dec-16-00 02:42 PM

I have just bought a game (gabriel knight 3) which requires DirectDraw. I have DX8. the game requires DX6.1 or higher. Everytime I try to start the game it says 'DirectDraw not supported or DirectX not install properly'. When i go into the dxdiag programme and run a test for directdraw it works perfectly. And it says all tests were succesful. DirectDraw acceleration is not disabled. I have a theory that its because my video driver is not microsoft certified(tells me in dxdiag). I have tried to get one but without luck. The card is and ARKLogic 2000PV.

Please help

ARKLogic 2000PV is more than likely the chipset on the display adapter and not the display adapter itself. See http://duxcw.com/digest/Fromshop/mb/det.htm for tips on how to identify the manufacturer of the board and go to the manufacture’s web site to look for drivers. Arc has some generic drivers for the chipset at http://www.arklogic.com/support.html.

You may want to try the following steps from Sierra’s site:

“First try starting the game via one of the troubleshooting startup shortcuts.
To do this:

1. Click on Start, Programs, Sierra and then the Gabriel Knight 3 program group.
2. Locate the Troubleshooting sub group and click on the GK3 Autodetect icon.
3. If the same or similar problems occur with the Autodetect icon try the GK3
Software icon instead.

Once the game is running it can be switched to using 3D hardware acceleration
from within the Game Configurations. Start a new game and right-click anywhere
on the screen. Click on the second icon from the right (it looks like a wrench).
Choose Graphic Options and click the drop down arrow next to 3D hardware to
select the driver”

Hi Larry

I have determined that the manufacturer of the card is Legend.

I have tried the autodetect thing and software thing you suggested but without luck. It keeps saying 'DirectDraw not detected or DirextX not installed properly'

I`m trying to find drivers. Does the fact that the driver is not supported by microsoft labs make any difference?

Thanx Larry

Hi Larry

I downloaded the driver for my card and installed it. Now directx 8 says its not directdraw capable. With my previous driver it was. Was my card in the first place not directdraw capable? The driver i`m using now is Legend 64Pv. Before i used Ark2000PV.

Please help

Thank You

I guess trying the new driver was a step backwards. You know as much as I do about the video card. Perhaps the game manufacturer has the answer. Sorry, I couldn't help further. Larry
