98/xp problems...again
prsnroftime Jul-01-02 09:02 PM
i have windows xp and windows 98 set up. we got the network to share the internet connection. its a dial up, so we got 2 linksys cards and the type of cables the sales man told us we needed to get. but our problem is we can't always share the connection. we have it set up so the windows xp computer connects and the win98 shares it. right now currently it is working, but not all the time it does. we'll be able to share files. but i just did notice on the winXP computer i could not see the win98 computer in network places forlder. and when i open network neighborhood, on win98, i can only see the winxp computer. If you can't tell im totally confused. i tend to get bad luck with computers, and my current issue is with the network. thanks!

Most salesmen don't know how to make cables or test them... Please describe the network configurations. What protocols are installed, etc.? Iím blind right now. All I can see are two operating systems and some sort of cable, and two Linksys NICs. Bad luck is something like a lightning strike, everything else in that department is pretty much man made. Larry

ok we got 50 ft of networking cable, the box said fast cat 5e, or something like that. I threw the boxes away. Then we have 7ft patch cable. and a coupler to connect them. both computers have a linksys etherfast 10/100 lan cards. i dont know anything about networks, i just want them to work!!!!!!!

Well, the rules haven't changed. It won't work the way you want until you have a good cable. Everything has to be rated for CAT 5 or higher, including the coupler and plugs (it does make a difference). Why are you using the coupler and 7 ft patch cable? Move the computer 7 ft closer and try it??? Larry

Actually, i think hes using the patch to make the whole 57 feet work as a crossover cable instead of buying a hub or router, or buying a 50 foot crossover cable. I was just about to do the same thing.

The problem may be that the coupler is not a CAT 5 or 5e coupler. It does make a difference. Also, the fewer things that are inserted into a line the better. Larry
