Cooling????
Hitech1 Oct-09-01 00:58 AM
Is it a good idea to run your computer with one of the side covers off? I've never done this before, but with my new GeForce card the CPU is running at least 5 degrees warmer then before the card change.

I'm using a Cool Solutions Ball Bearing Card Cooler, the fan on the GeForce card and an 80 mm fan at the rear of the mid size tower case.

The computer is a 2 1/2 year old Gateway 450mz PII, not overclocked with 256kb of ram.

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks .............. Hitech

I am still running a desktop with no cover and have been running them that way for about 16 years. I plan to continue the practice when I upgrade from a 500 MHz to 1+ GHz processor (and a new power supply). I have found the CPUs actually run cooler with the case open, which makes sense if you think about it. Some numbers for a 1.1 GHz processor in a tower with a side removed and not removed are at http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/buildcom/socka/8.htm. AMD Corp. does not like desktops. I would monitor it with sides off and sides on. Larry

Larry,

Could you tell me how you keep the dust out of the computer or if it gets in how you clean it out?

Obviously, I don’t. However, it is not a closed container with fans pushing/pulling air with dust into it like a vacuum cleaner. It accumulates much less dust than many covered computers I see in my shop, especially towers that are put on the floor. Also, my office/shop here in Maine, U.S.A. is heated with a wood stove which makes the environment worse (but not terrible) for computers than some. A leaking roof would be a much bigger problem.

Blow it out with lungs. Larry
