New Toys on the way!!!
deerslayer Jul-11-01 03:33 PM
Well I know Larry will be proud of me but I am finally going to try out AMD ( have a k2 400 but that dont count)
Will have an Iwill kk266r and a tbird 1.33. Will swap my p3 over to other case and run it with the radeon, keeping the GF3 with the new system. With my cooling I hope to be able to bench 3d mark 2001 with cpu @ 1550+. Right now I have the #2 P3 in the world in 3dmark 2001. Friend of mine borrowed a cpu and beat me by 10 points. . Waiting for a cool night to take rig out on the deck and get my top score back.
Pentium 3 1000 @ 1195, Abit bx-133, 256 Mb Mushkin Rev.3 cas 2-2-2, Leadtek GeForce 3 Air Cooled.

I am getting close to replacing my 500 MHz K6-2, but have a trip planned for a family reunion next month so it will have to wait until after then. I think I want to try-out an nFORCE motherboard. They should start shipping in August or Sept. Iíll probably settle for a 1 GHz Athlon, maybe a Palomino. And Iíve got an empty Antec SX840 case with an 400 Watt power supply setting on my workbench. The one thing that is likely to break a Socket A processor is heat. I doubt you'll get your money back if one overheats. Larry

well you have seen my case, and I have a thermalright sk6. If temps get too high it will crash long before any damage is done. I am sure I can keep load temp under 45c with the tbird. With this cooler on my p3 load temp is 35c.

I was referring to your other post about warranties. Other than heat and mishandling, processor failure is extremely rare and the risk involved in buying one without a warranty is likewise very low, if one assumes such a warranty is void if the processor is fried or mishandled. Larry

the nerve of some people: "K2's don't count" indeed. Hmmmph.

Well, I think I will be moving up to a 1 ghz Tbird very soon also.

CPU Inventory

THE Wifeís computer: 433 MHz VIA Cyrix II (Win 98; some bookkeeping, E-Mail, etc.)

My Sonís Computer: 800 MHz Pentium III (Win Me; musician who does a lot sound mixing and editing)

My Computer: 500 MHz K6-2 (Win Me, Win 2K Pro, Win XP RC1; may add Linux)

Office/Shop Server/Browse Master/Backups: 166 MHz Socket 7 Pentium (Win NT Server; works fine as it has for years; why change it?)

Office/Shop scratch/troubleshooting computer: 300 MHz K6-2 (currently Win 2K Pro)

And they wonder why the tech sector is in a slump. Everything is networked and all computers share the cable MODEM via a Barricade router. Upgrades, stealth, and hand-me-downs are the rule here. Larry

I think I'm going to wait a little longer for Palomino and nFORCE. I will use DDR memory. No way would I even consider a P4 after what I've read about it's peformance, cost of the CPU, and Rambus... And I'll probably not go higher than 1 GHz (if they still make 'em that slow then) unless prices are close. Actually, the K6-2 still works quite well for what I do with a computer, even though I am on it all day most days of the week. Larry

Wow these Tbirds are sweet. Had it to 1570 for 3dmark 2001 but got better score @ 9.5 x 164. ( 1558) 7333 for those of you familiar with the program.
Volt modded my motherboard last night so I have a POT to adjust voltage ( max was 1.85 before), had it to 1598 last night completely stable with a 21-22c room temp. Cpu Was 40C @ full load ( running folding @ home) and motherboard was 23c. Will take it to the basement when I have time and see how high it will go.
Been keeeping it @ 1500 ( 10x150) all the time, very stable and fast!!!
