Can I repair Win 98
rsierra Nov-29-00 05:19 PM
I would like to repair or replace missing files on my Win 98 OS. I am not sure if I try to reinstall the OS will this delete anything that I have installed on the PC?

thank you

Try running Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Tools, System File Checker. If you know the names of the missing files, you can extract them from the Win 98 CD with the same tool. One can usually install win 98 on top of Win 98 without serious problems, but not always. I would make sure I had a good back-up of critical data (e.g., My Documents, c:\windows\cookies, c:\windows\favorites, c:\windows\*.pwl, etc.) and a working Startup floppy that can access your CD-ROM (http://duxcw.com/digest/Fromshop/software/windows/startup/startup.htm and http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/winme/startup/page1.html) first. Reinstalling Windows will not always replace all missing files… Larry
