RED HAT 7.3 installation Problems - to DJNETFINITY and anyone else
stephenl Jun-12-02 10:50 AM
Installed REDHAT on my pc at home and wanted to install it again on new machine but got the following errors during installation

EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
cramfs: wrong magic
FAT: unable to read boot sector
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=9:00, iso_blknum=16, block=32
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 09:00

Any ideas i have used the install disks on another machine afterwards just to make sure and they worked fine.

For info spec of machine is

AMD 1200 Athlon
PC Chips 810MLR Mobo with SIS Chipset (everything on board)
40GB Seagate IDE 7400RPM Hard disk

Im thinking its a hardware compatibility problem any help appreciated

When did these errors occur? All these errors point to your hard drive, make sure it is completely formated before you install Red Hat. You are correct, it could be a hardware compatibility problm because I can't find documentation that this board will run the kernel. I would completely wipe out the drive using a disk utility, and try to install it again. During the install make sure you chose Ext3, its alot better. I gotta get back to work, lemme know if you need more info.

these errors only occur when booting installation disks i thought it could be the drive so tried a completely new one and still the same i think its the board

Yeah its probably do to the way the board handles the IDE controller, thats why when building a new Linux box, I check the hardware compatibility list on Red Hats Site.

I have not installed Linux yet (soon, soon!), but there is some stuff at http://www.microwerks.net/~hugo/download/HOWTO/faqbooting.html which may prove to be useful. Larry

Had a look at that website Larry looks a bit too complicated for a linux newbie with no C knowledge at all it was talking about Recompiling my kernel i cant even install the thing properly i think ill have to do a bit of reading i might even buy a new board could be easier dont suppose anyone has got any idea of a cheap board u can recommend thats IS compatible with Linux ? Ill have a good look round the HCL section today.

Theyre (redhat bods) are doing a roadshow type thing in one of the conferences u can take your pc there and get them to load redhat for u i might go and hassle them for some info or maybe take my machine

Larry / DJNETFINITY

Thanks for suggestions had a dig round the web and a Linux Bod came up with the following which ill try

try with the "autoboot.bat" file on the CDROM RH 7.3 n 1
installed on a dos partition.
put all the files indicated in the autoboot.bat on the dos partition of
course.
it's a ISO CDROM problems that's making this kernel panic
