Bad Icons!
Email this tip to a friend - Browse the Archives

Occasionally, the Icons on a desktop can become corrupted. They start taking bribes, soft money... you know. Sorry, a little humor. Anyway, corrupted icons can be a big mess and cause the casual computer user to want to reinstall Windows 98 to solve the problem. Well, there is an easier way. Reboot your computer into DOS mode and find a hidden file called ShellIconCache located in the Windows directory. Delete it. Now, restart Windows and the cache will be reset.

can you please help me with this problem...
thanks in advance

Open the Windows Explorer, Click Tools, Folder Options, View, and Select Show hidden files and folders. ShellIconCache is a hidden file. Shutdown Windows, restart your computer, hold the Ctrl key (or press the F8 key just before the Windows starts firing-up) as the computer boots, Select Start in safe mode from the resulting menu, boot all the way up to Windows in the safe mode. Next, in the Windows Explorer, click on the plus sign next to the C: drive to expand it if isn't expanded, click on the Windows folder, scroll down the right Explorer window pane, find the ShellIconCache file and click on it to highlight it, press the Delete key, and click Yes when Windows asks you if you want to send the file to the recycle bin, shutdown Windows, and restart your computer (in the normal mode).

I did this and still my icons are the same? The way the y look is a piece of paper with the windows logo on it. I do not understand why this happened. Is there any other things you can think of?

Thanks in advance,

Sure, the icon files are missing--probably deleted--or the shortcuts are not pointing to them. That isn't file corruption (it could be caused by bad disk sectors, but that isn't likely without other problems). What version of Windows do you have? If you have Windows 98 or newer, click Start Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Tools System File Checker, Scan for Altered Files, Start. That might fix it, but I'm not sure. You may have to hunt for them Icon files) in the cab files/repoint the shortcuts, or install Windows on top of Windows. Larry

I am running windows 98se. I tried the system file checker with no success. Do you have any other ideas? Can you explain to me what you mean by hunt for the icons in the cab files/repoint the shortcuts. Windows 98se came with my computer an HP 6630, so i only have the system recovery disk which will erase all of my information on the HD, then i would have to start from scratch. Can I extract the files from the disk using the system information panel? If so how? My computer uses 2 recovery disks!

Thanks in advance,
TENLOWZ

First, right-click each bad icon, properties, Change icon, and see if you can find the right one. If no, note its name--make a list of missing icons. Larry
