Hi,
I want to upgrade from WIn95 4.00.950b to win98SE.
Do I need to reinstall win98se from scratch or just over write my WIN95 with WIN98se.

Which install is better or should I install WINDOWS ME .

Whenever one installs a new version of Windows it is usually much better to do a clean install. That gets rid of any problems that have developed in the old version through use and eliminates any lingering driver problems, etc. Of course, that will involve backing-up your data installing the new version of Windows, and reinstalling all of your applications (see http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/upgrade/intro.htm, http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/buildcom/athlon/ath_7.htm, and http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/winme/install/inst.html for how to do it ). Before taking that hard disk down to bare metal, be sure that you have a Start-up disk that works (see
http://duxcw.com/digest/Fromshop/software/windows/startup/startup.htm) and can access your CD-ROM or you can boot directly to the new Windows CD (98 or 98 SE; Me won’t boot from the CD—set your CMOS to boot to the CD-ROM). Be sure to back-up your favorites, cookies, and password file in the Windows directory/subdirectories, but not Windows in its entirety). If I were to pick which version of Windows I would upgrade Win 95 with, it would be 98, not SE or Me). And then I would install all available free upgrade/bug fix stuff on Microsoft’s web site, including IE 5.5. I would not upgrade Windows for Internet sharing. Buy SyGate (http://duxcw.com/digest/Reviews/Network/sygate/sygate.htm) or, better, if you have a cable MODEM or DSL, buy a broadband router, such as the SMC Barricade (http://duxcw.com/digest/Reviews/Network/smc/smc7004br/smc7004br.htm). If I already had Windows 95 OSR2 and no version of 98, I might be tempted to wait for the next version: Whistler. Larry
