DVD will not play DVD's, only CD's
reekesr Dec-13-01 03:20 AM
I have a Toshiba SD-M1212 DVD-ROM. It was installed by an independant computor business when he built my computer 2 yrs ago. I just now tried the DVD and got a video problem message in InterActual. I checked the system profile section and there is no info in the DVD Decoder tab except in the line where it asks if the DVD was detected, it says "NO". It plays CD's fine. I tried booting up from the 98 boot disk and that didn't help. I am running 98SE.

Start here: http://player.interactual.com/help/support/default.asp. If that doesn’t help, I'll need more specifics about your hardware, software, and error message. Larry

Thanks for the Ref, but I already went there. based on my error, they say I either don't have software or the DVD card. I can't imagine not having the card, as the DVD is working for CD's. (I don't have any software package for the DVD, they installed it in error and I gave it to me anyway. Here is the exact error I get: "Playback failed due to a problem with the video subsystem. Lowering your screen resolution or color depth may fix the problem" Resolution and color depth adjustments made no difference. Here are some specs on my computer:
450HZ AMD K6 processor
128meg RAM
32meg S4 savage video card
CD-RW ROM
DVD Toshiba SD M1212 (6X)
Win 98SE OS
Thanks for any help you might provide!

You have to have a software or hardware encoder running. Larry

I understood from the site you gave me I needed either software or hardware. How can I tell which one I have or dont have and if it is software is that something you can download from somewhere. In short what steps can I take to figure out what I need.

I sure can't tell you what you have and do not have... Some video boards come with the software. Check their web site and CD. I used a Creative Labs hardware encoder (http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/buildcom/athlon/ath_1.htm) the last time I did it which was quite some time ago. Larry

The interactual player doesn't do any DVD decoding, it just uses the decoding capabilities of a DVD decoder on your system. Most common are: Creative Labs Dxr3 (Hardware), Sigma Designs Hollywood pLus (Hardware), WinDVD (Software) and PowerDVD (software). If you don't have one of those installed, you need to get one!
