No CD ROM Drive letter under Win95
stevejlee Dec-06-01 10:36 PM
Hi Larry.
Long time no problem!
I recently made a working PC out of 2 old ones for a friend. Part of this was transplanting an HDD from one to the other. Having done this, I moved the existing ( and working ) CD drive to the secondary IDE, and jumpered it as the master on that channel.
The CD drive is recognised on boot up, and it appears in Device Manager, saying that it is working properly under the "general" tab.
However, under the "properties" tab there is no drive letter assigned to it, and it does not appear as a drive in "My Computer" or Explorer.
Can you give me any clues as to what to check? I have looked at the FAQ's and forums, but can't really find an answer, and have tried the newly-designed Microsoft Knowledge Base ( What have they done with Win95 on there !!? They still mention Win 3.1, but then go straight to Win98 - Win95 seems to have 'ceased to be' as far as they are concerned )
I do hope that you, or anyone else, can point me in the right direction.
Steve lee.

For Win 95, configure config.sys to run real-mode DOS driver for the CD-ROM drive and run mscdex from the autoexec.bat file (it may be rem'd out) http://duxcw.com/faq/cdrom/cdrom.htm. Larry

Thanks, Larry. I will have a look next week ( I can't get back to that machine till Wednesday at the earliest.)
Mind you, the CD drive was working OK - it should have just moved on a drive letter ( or so I thought ) when I installed the second HDD.
Cheers,
Steve Lee

Oh. Yes, it should have done that unless the drives have multiple partitions. You might try adding a LASTDRIVE = something. Syntax can probably be had with LASTDRIVE /? Larry
