Maxtor 60 GB, OK with Win98, but not with Win2K HELP!
skyskiier Nov-26-01 09:14 PM
1.)I have a Maxtor 60 GB HDD. 5T060H6 7200 RPM.
Connected on 2nd IDE as Primary. nothing else on the IDE. First IDE has 6GB fireball, and a CD-ROM.
2.)BIOS update not possible. Since my mb mf is Vision Top Technology, which is gone.
3.)So I installed EZ-BIOS comes with MaxBlast Plus1.27s.
4.) I partitioned the disk into 3 partions all 20GB, and formated.
5.) Installed Win98 SE.
All 3 partitions works fine.
6.) Then installed Win2K, at the setup stage, it first treated it as 60GB (EZ-BIOS?), saying analyzing 60G disk...etc, then for some reason, quickly switch to Saying analyzing 32 GB, which is my mb BIOS's cap. The format page shows me
32 GB total (Very wierd)
20 GB unrecognized or corrupted.
20 GB unrecognized or corrupted.
20 GB unused.
I did nothing, to the disk since
I've already had data on it from Win98 SE.
I installed Win2K onto my 1st HDD 6GB fireball.
7.) Boot into Win2K, I cannot see the disk as I can see from Win98 SE.
8.) Device Manager sees Maxtor 5T060H6 and says it's working normally, but why not me ?
9.)Shut down and boot to Win98SE. I can see the disk there.
10.)Switch to Win2K, still cannot see.
11.)I am in nightmare. Spent the Thanksgiving with Maxtor and Win2K. HELP!

I think I would replace that motherboard before losing another holiday. Sorry, but I don't have a better answer. Larry

P.S. No computer is worth a holiday, unless you must work on them to eat. That's what I did part of Thanksgiving until my wife dragged me out of the shop at about 2:00 PM for Thanksgiving dinner.

Yeah.... Thanx.
I am considering to upgrade the motherboard. And maybe my processor too. I have an old P II 300.

That's not so terribly old. I think I would try removing EZ, all partions, running
A:\>fdisk /mbr
..to restore the manufacturer's boot record, creating a 20-30 MByte partition, formating with FAT32, D: (CD-ROM drive), CD \i386, winnt to install 2K, and convert the partition to NTFS. May, may not work... Larry
