kamlesh Aug-30-01 03:44 PM
Hi,
I installed a Quantum 20gig ATA 100 hard drive as D and formated it as FAT32 files system.
When I start the system it says it sees the 20gig drive in the Promise bios.
When I look at it on Windows explorer it only shows 8gig.
I have windows 98SE, I tried with PArtion magic too, it only seet he 8gig.

Please can you help me with this problem.

Thank you
Kam Darbar

What motherboard/computer do you have? The BIOS may need to be updated to handle drives great than 8.4 GBytes (e.g., http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/8point4.html). Larry

From your info, I’m not able to determine what motherboard (http://duxcw.com/digest/Fromshop/mb/det.htm) you have. The info I can find indicates the BIOS is for the A-trend ATC-6220 motherboard. However, the A-trend BIOS download page at http://www.atrend.com.tw/download/bios.html shows that that motherboard has the 440BX chipset and your info says the chipset is an Intel 440LX (no longer supported by Intel--discontinued). Furthermore, are you saying that you have a Promise disk controller board in the computer? If so, the BIOS on that board should be the determining factor. What is the model number of the Promise board? Larry

Hi Larry,
The promise bios detects the 20gig hard drive when I boot up.
When I goto Windows explorer it only shows 8gigs.
Also partion magic only let e partion the first 8 gig.
I will check the promise board this evening when I go home.

Kam

If you made an 8 gig partition that's all you will see in Windows. Larry

Maxtor does Quantum HD support. A utility can be installed to overcome the 8.4 Gig "limit". Their support area says:

Disk Manager is a hard drive installation utility for overcoming BIOS capacity limitations on PC systems. It intercepts BIOS Int13h calls and allows systems which do not support LBA or other extended translation to give users the full capacity of their ATA hard drive. It can also be used as a convenient partitioning and formatting tool for your hard drive.

Please be advised: Maxtor no longer licenses the Ontrack® Disk Manager software and it has been removed from our software download page as of 8/28/01. All new drive installations or existing drive reinstallations for Quantum® ATA hard drives should be performed using Maxtor's MaxBlast Plus (v1.27S or newer) or MaxBlast Plus II software. The MaxBlast software can be downloaded from Maxtor's Maxtor Software Download Page. The contents of this FAQ are being provided strictly for troubleshooting and/or reference purposes for the support of customers who have installed their Quantum hard drive with the Ontrack Disk Manager software prior to 8/28/01.
