game not finding CD drive
bxg Jun-30-01 10:33 PM
Hi,
I just got "age of empires 2". it installs w/o error, but when I try to run the game it says it cant find the cd-rom drive (please insert correct cd in drive). I've looked for a .ini or config file in the game directory that might be pointing to the wrong drive letter, but there isnt anything like that ( the drive led is even flashing when it errors). the MS troubleshooting website has me checking my cd reader for operation. I did that and found nothing wrong.
the cd drive is a fairly new 50x that I got on Ebay without manual or driver (I plugged and it played) and reads everything else i put in it.
so wassup?
I tried reinstalling the game and I've tried the game cd on another computer and it worked there. I've done abuncha other stuff too, but this is getting too long.
can there be such a thing as an incompatible drive? thanx in advance for any advice. when I get home Im gonna pull the drive and get manufacurer info and check for a website.

so here's the deal, I figgerd out last night that it's caused by a slow disk recognition time. the game queries the cd and errors before it has time to get a response. so I'm changing my question to: is there any way to speed this parameter up? I'm going to open the case and see how it's set up. if the drive is set to slave, will it be faster if I set it to master? thanx again.

That’s not uncommon: a CD-ROM drive not coming up to speed fast enough and a program try to read a CD producing a “try again error.” Making it a Master might make it a little faster. Checking DMA in Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager, select the CD-ROM Drive, Properties, Settings will probably make it a lot faster, but I doubt it will make it spin-up faster. Larry

both those things were done. we found that we could get the game to work if we timed it just right when it autostarts (still spinning). oh well, I wanted a cd-rw anyway.

If you have a large hard disk drive, you may be able to move the entire game to the drive, but I don't know for fact. Larry
