Soltek SL-52d2 , not recognise mouse after Win 98 install
julz Jun-05-01 09:56 AM
Had this PC set up with Mainboard sitting on bench all worked OK, after fitting all items into case, win98 would no longer detect a mouse, dissasemble and all is ok. Rhino 9 motherboard is ok in both situations, all hardware changed to no avail, please help.

I really don't understand your post. Could you elaborate starting with what kind of mouse you have (serial or PS/2) and under what conditions it is or is not detected? Larry

Ok, I had the PC in bits on the bench as i am rebuilding a couple of old ones, all works fine until i reassemble all the gear into a case, then windows 98 will not recognise the mouse on either comm port, serial or PS2 it does not matter, i think it may have something to do with the earthing through the comm port but am not sure.

Experience shows that it is probably not a ground problem. RS-232 interfaces operate at +-12 volts and are quite robust. It could be a compatibility problem between the cables going from the motherboard to the outside of the case. I have seen many cases where the serial (and parallel) cable/bracket assembly from one motherboard will not work with another motherboard. Also—long shot, check for a chassis-motherboard stand-off that does not match the motherboard mounting holes and may be shorting-out the motherboard. I would test the mice from dos (you’ll need a dos mouse.sys/mouse.com, etc. to do that), and if it works in DOS and not in Windows, see the second answer at http://duxcw.com/faq/win/win.htm. See http://duxcw.com/faq/modems/modems.htm for ideas on testing serial ports. Lastly, bad mice and mismatched drivers are quite common. Larry
