MVP3G2 , Matrox G400 difficulties
ronbruce Jun-24-00 09:02 AM
This Computer build is becoming a trial of wits,
I am having some difficulty geting a G400 to run in anything but safe mode, as it doesn't seem to
like being in the same box as a SB Live card.
I am also trying to accommodate my MIRO DC 30 card
whitch was a breeze to set up on my BH6 board.
It needs to use IRQ 9.10 or 11 and slot 1 or 2.

I have tried removing and reinstalling everything
at least 3 times,I moved the SB card from IRQ 11 to 5 I have installed Win 95 update ,4.12 Bios, and Via 4 in 1. using Matrox Bios 1.5-22.
Any guesses...... Ronbruce

You can control what IRQ is assigned to which PCI slot in the CMOS Setup, PNP/PCI CONFIGURATION on the right side. PCI slot 1 is next to the AGP slot. IRQs are used as follows:
0 System Timer
1 Keyboard
2 2nd IRQ controller
3 COM2:
4 COM1:
5 Free (used by LPT2: or sound card)
6 Floppy disk
7 LPT1:
8 Clock
9 Free (may appear as IRQ 2)
10 (often used by sound cards)
11 Free
12 PS/2 mouse
13 Math coprocessor on CPU (used)
14 Primary IDE
15 Secondary IDE

To free-up more IRQs, disable COM2: and USB, if you arenít using them.
You may have to use PCI IRQ sharing by enabling OS is PnP aware in the CMOS Setup. Be sure the VIA IRQ miniport driver is installed. Theoretically, up to four well-behaved PC cards can share a single IRQ (I have never seen that situation, but I have seen two PCI cards share an IRQ OK). Larry

thanks Larry,
However I am no closer.
I think that I have tried every combination of
IRQ's available.
The EPOX book is hopeless, gives no clues what
Primary, Secondary and disabled mean in Power
Management setup of IRQ's,
On boot up , PCI device listing shows..
Bus no. 0 IDE controller IRQ 14
0 Serial bus controller NA
0 Multimedia device 5
0 input device NA
1 Display controller NA
ACPI controller 11
What is a display controller is it the Matrox card
Keep getting " Problem with Display settings"
Matrox Utilities in DOS says "switches are mutually exclusive"
In PNP/PCI config. how do you set it up? I dont have any ISA cards, just a AGPVideo and PCIsound card which default wants to use IRQ 11, so I changed slot 4 to IRQ 5 in PNP/PCI config.
Does the AGP card really require an IRQ?
Why does EPOX make this stuff so difficult.
Beenat this for 4 days now ( with your esteemed help) I set up BH6 with similar cards in 30 minuites.

Hi Larry,
I managed to get into normal mode 256 colors and
discovered that there is a conflict on IRQ 11,
with the G400 card conflicting with the "VIA Tech
CPU to AGP controller"
everything else is in the right place.
What is the CPU to AGP controller and how do I assign it another IRQ? preferably 9 or 10 so my MIRO Card will be able to use 9 or 10

I await your wisdom with great gratitude

ronbruce

Where do you see the conflict? The VIA Tech
CPU to AGP controller is part of the chipset on the motherboard (the Northbridge). I have an MVPG2 and no IRQ is assigned to the VIA Tech
CPU to AGP controller. Larry

Hi Larry, never let it be said that I give up on these things....selected VGA, Pulled the G400 ,
installed a Viper V550 played with settings using conflict device box, every time I fixed one conflict, often with the Via controller, another
would pop up, eventually I founds an old Tseng
Labs ET400 PCI card, spent a few more hours trying
to find settings that didnt conflict with any thing....At last, it works, no conflicts...
installed the SB live... wow still works...16 bit
colour, 1024 x 768.
Now what will happen if I pull the 4mb card and
plug in the G400.. should the settings stay ok???
I will probably put an axe thru the Epox board
if it stuffs up again.

regards ronbruce

As mentioned before, it looks to me like you need to do PCI IRQ sharing/steering. That is allow more than one board to have the same IRQ. Click the Computer in the Device Manager. If you see lines with ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering, you are sharing IRQs. You must have Win 95 OSR2 or higher to do it. See Article ID: Q182604 at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q182/6/04.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0 for more info. Larry
