modem probs
petemaher May-23-02 10:48 AM
when trying to connect to the internet through IE I after clicking the connect button I instantly get the message unable to establish a connection, this problem has just occured without any changes being made to my system. When I get properties on my modem from device manager it says device cannot start (code 10). I have tried diferent PCI slots and reinstalling but still getting the same thing. Another prblem is I have noticed lots of HD activity when the computer is not in use this has also just started happening, should I be concerned about this?

Thanks!
Pete.

I would scan for a worm (virus) and try uninstalling and reinstall the MODEM driver. If you are running Windows 9x/Me, you can test the MODEM with Start, Settings, Control Panel, Modems, Diagnostics, select port/MODEM, More Info. While in the Control Panel, check the System, Device Manager for exclamation marks. If you see any, run the resource conflict troubleshooter. Suggest disabling motherboard serial ports in the CMOS Setup if you are not using those ports. See our MODEM FAQs for more steps. Larry

Thanks Larry.
The only virus scan software I could find which did not require internet connection was some freeware software called virscan, I ran it and I came back with 320 files infected with a virus called w32/Elkern.c2 (this would explain the HD activity). I have used the software to delete all the infected files it has found but dont know what to do now. I reconfigured my modem and reinstalled the drivers and now have no problems, however how can I be sure that it has completely cleaned my drive?. I have lost quite a few files and I dont have anything too important on my computer so should I just reformat then reinstall my OS? Have you heard of this virus, do you think I could have infected my BIOS as it sometimes crashes when I hit the delete key (entering BIOS)?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks again!
Pete.

That is an awful lot of files. I would backup and do a clean instll of everything (from virus-free media) unless I knew all of those files were from unimportant tempory files such temprory Inteernet files. To be on the safe side you could clear the CMOS (http://duxcw.com/faq/cmos/cmos.htm). Got to run and buy a birthday present. Larry
