Can I add a USB port to my PC?
villan Jan-18-02 10:18 PM
I have just bought a Canon Powershot A20 Digital Camera but find now that my aged PC does not have a USB port...can I fit a new one to use a Card Reader with? I am running Windows ME (upgraded from W95).

Yes you can. If you have an available PCI slot, you can put a USB PCI card that will give your system 2 USB ports. Usually these cards run for about $20-$30 at a local PC store. I can't remember if every PC store still carries them. Anyway, it comes with a floppy disk to install the drivers. It is really easy to install.

Your motherboard may in fact have USB. Check the manual. If you don’t have the manual, identify the motherboard (http://duxcw.com/digest/Fromshop/mb/det.htm) and check the manufacturer’s web sit for info. You should also be able to determine if USB is available in the motherboard CMOS Setup. Many Baby AT form factor motherboards (e.g., http://duxcw.com/digest/Reviews/MBs/Epox/mvp3c2/mvp3c2.htm) had USB but did not come with a cable/bracket assembly needed to connect the USB header on the motherboard to the outside of the case. You may be able to find one at a local computer store or on the Internet, etc. Larry
