Outlook XP Blocks access to potentially unsafe attachments
shoagie Dec-14-01 02:11 PM
While beta testing Office XP in the office I have encountered this error message in Outlook when I receive a message with an attachment: "Outlook blocked access to the potentially unsafe file attachment: enroll.mdb." I was expecting this file, had it resent to a colleague using Office 2000. I retrieved it from a shared folder on the server. I scanned it and it is free of viruses. I experienced the same problem when I sent a message to another colleague with an Access file attachment. He is also using Office XP. Outlooked blocked the attachment. I checked your message boards and Microsoft and was not able to figure out how to disable this blocking feature in Outlook. I want to have the option of turning off the blocking "feature.?" I am VERY CONFIDENT that these files are not infected. We run Innoculate on our server and update the signature files frequently. Your input is valued. Thanks Larry.

You can't save it to a file? Try fidgeting with you security levels. I am running Outlook 2000. Tools, Options, Security, Secure content, Zone Settings, Custom Level. Larry

Not sure about Office XP, but this link http://www.woodyswatch.com/office/archtemplate.asp?v6-n44 explains similar behavior in Office 2K SP2.
Hope this helps,
Jeff

Thanks to you both of you; Larry, and Jeff. I could not find a way to tweak the Security settings that would allow the attachments through. Apparently, I am not alone, in this situation. Perhaps MS will offer a patch some day. For now, my co-workers (using Office 2K with SP1) will need to retrieve my attachments for me, and save them to the server, where I can access them. Is this was Billy G. really intended for us to resort to?

I found a work around. Even a Microsoft representative acknowledged this. Before sending an Access attachment, change the file name extension. It works.

Sounds like a new security problem to me? What's one more among so many that I have lost count and to the point that it is getting quite boring to read new ones? In fact, there have been so many of them and so many new ones practically every day that one could probably assume that while they are obviously working on the problems, various current products from this vendor will never be secure.
