ScanJet 4100C and Windows Millenium

Has anyone had a problem getting this scanner to work under Windows ME?

On searching their Web Site I find that you need either a patch if you upgrade to ME or to order a new CD if you installed a fresh ME. I ordered the CD. I had some problems when I tried to install the program because of my earlier attempts to get it to work with the older software. After I deleted the USB Human Interface Device and the Universal Serial Bus controller and then re-booted the server, everything seemed to install correctly. I say seems as when I push the green button on the scanner the software comes up but as soon as it goes "the lamp is warming up" I get a "An Unidented program error has occured <2117>" Again, searching their web site I found an article on this error but it relates to Windows 98 and doesn't seem to apply to Windows ME. I am hoping that I don't have to re-format the drive and start over just to find out the problem still exists. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Formatting the hard disk should be the very last resort for fixing a problem and is probably not justified in terms of the time required as a means to solve this problem. Did you remove the Adobe Type manger per http://duxcw.com/digest/Fromshop/scanners/scanjet4100c/4100ctip-3.htm. If your motherboard has a VIA chipset, did you install the USB filter driver per the same article? See “HP Scanjet scanners - Scanner Not Responding 2093, Unidentified Program Error 2117” at http://www.hp.com/cposupport/scanners/support_doc/bps03134.html. Larry

I have the exact same problem and reformatted my hardrive from scratch.... DID NOT HELP. One thing that is very frustrating is that usbscan.sys in the folder system32 can not be overwritten by the new HP file. Somehow windows replaces the file from there restore feature (which is automatic by the way) HP comments that the usbscan.sys must be below 8kb windows is 14kb and impossible to get rid of. Does anybody know how to replace this file I have tried most everything.

If you can identify the HP usb driver, try going into the Control Panel, Device Manger, locating the USB driver, Properties, Driver, and telling Windows to update it with he HP driver. Larry

After spending 45min on the phone with HP. They finaly gave me the easy solution, and it was right there in front of me. Windows ME has its own scanning software( maybe you new that already... I however did not) Uninstall HP software and remove scanner from Device manager. reboot and relaod scanner (not software) the windows software should appear in "My Computer". IT works!!!!
Now why did'nt they have that as an option on there site?
Oh well I'm happy now, and I hope this helps anybody out there that is still having problems.

Just want to thank you for the ScanJet 4100C fix of February 21. I had been getting along great until I reinstalled WIN ME, then I lost the scanner. After trying to install HP's sj406en.exe with the scanner connected (as recommended) as well as disconnected, removed from Device Manager, etc., etc., found your fix and all is well except that the left button brings up Photo Shop; in short, I can't print by touch of the left button which actually was lost after installing Photo Shop. But I'm happy just to be able to use the scanner again. Google is the best! I certainly agree that HP has been deficient in not mentioning this fix.
