HELP! ICS WON'T WORK WITH 98 Client & Windows ME with a DSL
foxconsult Apr-30-01 03:39 PM
Would be very appreciative if anyone can help.

I have a Windows ME & a Win98 box. I am networking them with ethernet cards, rj45 cables and a hub.

Everything works except internet connection sharing.

I have run the home networking wizard on both PCs. I have run the internet connection wizard on the client.

I have followed all the windows troubleshooting wizards.

It is now 4 days I'm trying to share an internet connection with no results. The internet connection sharing icon always reports just 1 user connected.

I have tried just about everything I can think of. I have had to use the Windows ME System Restore function at least 6 times in the past two days as my meanderings through the network settings have blown out my dsl.

I have been all over the net and every article just says, "use the wizard. it's that easy!"

Earthlink won't help. Microsoft can't help. Help!

Remove all networking components on the client and do not use the Wizard on the client. Reinstall the network adapter, and everything according to http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/win98se/client.htm. Open a DOS window in Windows and type:
C:\ping 192.168.0.1
Try
C:\ping 216.92.56.121
What do you see?

Hi Larry,

The ping works fine but the browser doesn't. I went in to control panel->network and removed everything then rebooted.

I got everything set up just like the web page. However I still get the "cannot find server" in the IE title bar and "page cannot be displayed" response.

What can I do?

Good. Almost there… You should be able to browse http://216.92.56.121 from the client. If you can, do this on the ICS host… Start, Run, winipcfg, More info, and record the IP address of the primary DNS server. Click the button next to it with … on it and record the secondary DNS server IP. Go to the client and click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network, select the TCP/IP bound to the network adapter connecting the client to the ICS host, Properties, DNS Configuration tab, Enable DNS, enter the two DNS IP addresses and click Add for each, OK, and restart Windows when prompted. Your browser will now access http://duxcw.com/ just as it did when you browsed its IP address. Larry

I can't browse http://216.92.56.121 nor can I ping it. I can ping 192.168.0.1 with 0% loss. With 216.92.56.121 the request times out for all 4 packets.

Any suggestions?

TIA,

Cary

By the way, I noticed that home & share were not set up correctly. That is due to a system restore I ran. I just corrected them via the ICS User Interface.

I can still ping 192.168.0.1 from the client but the browser still can't do anything.

Thanks,

Cary

I would fully uninstall and reinstall ICS using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. It's probably mucked-up. Larry

Hi Larry,

The only way to uninstall was to re-run the Home Network Wizard and indicate the ME box would not be sharing it's internet services.

Then I reran the HNWiz and chose to install ICS. I pointed the first connection at my DSL adapter and the 2nd connection at my home network adapter.

Then I went back to the client and tried to ping 192.168.0.1. It worked as usual. But when I tried to ping your ip address the request timed out.

The client has everything unchecked in terms of specific ip addresses and proxies. The TCP gateway is set to 192.168.0.1 in the client. It is not set on the ME box.

Any ideas?

Thanks as always,

Cary

It's hard to determine where the problem is. I've done it many times... remove everything network on both computers, install the host, install ICS on the host, install the client, and setup the client manually--don't Whiz it. Larry

Larry,

I did it. Well sort of. Bottom line is I can get everything working with my dial up adapter as the "connect to the internet using..." in the ICS options drop down.

It just won't work with my Earthlink adapter. Any suggestions?

I am forced to believe I've been configuring it correctly for a few days but it just won't work with my Earthlink configuration.

I noticed this when I reconfigured the network from scratch. When I ping'd 216.92.56.121 before logging on to Earthlink, I got a "destination not available" message.

After I logged on and successfully connected to the Internet I then got the "request timed out" message from 216.92.56.121.

That led me to believe that it the dial up adapter might work.

So now I'm sort of stumped as Earthlink wants you to buy their network kit which carries a monthly fee. Is it possible they found a way to block ICS?

TIA,

Cary

Also,

I didn't need to use a gateway ip# on the client. With the dial up adapter everything works on the client automatically.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!!!!!!

After successfully getting the browser to work with my 56k modem I just logged on using Earthlink, and voila, I am surfing high speed on the client.

So the answer was the ICS should have pointed to the dial up adapter.

Thanks so much for all your help Larry. It gave me an excellent framework with which to analyze the problem.

Best,

Cary
