SMC Barricade Router w/ Deskjet 712c

I've recently set up a home network with 2 PCs, a cable modem and the SMC7004 Barricade router. One PC is a 98SE machine, the other is a dual-boot 98SE/Win2K machine. Under Windows 2000 I have no problem using the print server feature of the Barricade. However, neither of the 98 machines will print to the printer. They report no errors, but neither do they print. I've followed the directions for installing the PrtMate software and for selecting PrtMate as the printer port with the appropriate IP address.

Additional info: Both machines work when I reconnect the printer to their local LPT1 port and reconfigure the port setting. I've tried unloading and reloading the 10.3 version of the HP drivers with no change. I've turned off the bidirectional printing option -- no change. Does anyone have some idea of what might be the problem?

I have had exactly the same problem with an Epson printer. I have been messing around with it for about a week - must have driven Larry crazy with all the questions I asked, but today following his suggestions, I changed the cable connectors and it worked fine. I had the same problem w/my SMC Barricade and HP 'Deskjet 720C printer w/Win98 SE. Disabling the bidirectional printing worked for me...how did you disable yours?

Go to Start/Settings/Printers. Select your printer, right click the mouse, then click properties, details, spool settings, and then disable bidirectional support for your printer there.

I found that using HP's method to disable bidirectional support did not work. I had to disable the windows 98 bidirectional support in the spool settings.

I have disabled the bidirectional printer support in both places (spooler and through HP utility). I now receive an error stating something like "Cannot print to the PrtMate: port for the printer, specified path is invalid" I've double-checked the port settings, made sure the address is the address of the router, etc.

Last night I stayed on hold for 1 hour 15 minutes waiting for SMC to help, but had to give up... I'll see if an e-mail gets a better response.

Iím sorry to hear about the hold. In the past I have not had that problem with SMC. If it happens to me, I will certainly report it to this forum. If any others have that kind of problem with SMC, please inform us. Larry

I kept debating whether to hang up and start again but didn't want to lose my spot in line

I've just called again and this time got through in about 15 minutes. They've given me a solution so I'll try it out tonight when I get home.

I think my current setup has bidirectional printing disabled only in the Windows 98 print spooler and not in the HP utility. I did not disable both simultaneously, but I will recheck this tonight to confirm and let you know.

You might want to try uninstalling the HP driver, then reinstalling it, and reinstalling the SMC driver if you have not done so already. And of course, your printer cable must be connected to the SMC Barricade printer port (sometimes those simple things might be overlooked). Printer sharing is not active in Networking properties.

I only phoned SMC tech support once (about using DMZ) and they responded quickly and were very helpful.

I've tried all combinations of disabling the bidirectional printer support. I've also tried the uninstall/reinstall route with similar non-success. The printer cable is connected correctly to the Barricade. I appreciate your suggestions however.

Since last posting, I decided to call again and got a potential solution which I will try tonight.

For anyone that is interested: If you have an HP Deskjet 710c/712c you need to uninstall the latest 10.3 Win98 drivers and install the older 10.1 Win95 drivers for the 720c.

SMC support gave me the following URL:

I just checked my HP 720C driver - it is version 10.1 for Win95. I guess I'm a bit lucky that I did not upgrade the driver otherwise I'd be faced with the same problem that you have. The old driver worked fine from day 1, so I never did upgrade it.

I wonder how Blaine fared with his HP 712 printer - hope the old drivers solved his problem.

Don't you get somewhat anxious when you don't get any feedback for a problem that interests you?

I am not referring to this thread, but I'll tell you that it is extremely frustrating to work hours each day, often seven days a week, researching problems and providing advice to readers, and not receiving any feedback whatsoever from many of them as to whether or not I helped, or that they even read the post. Yes, that *did* solve the problem and everything is working well now. I guess the 10.1 drivers must be less diligent about trying to check the physical LPT1 port or trying to communicate bi-directionally. Whatever it was, I'm so glad to have a solution and I especially appreciate the help of both you and coppermine.

I have read the posts and yes I meant to post feedback earlier. In fact, I've made it a regular practice to visit these forums now. You guys *are* great and deserve *lots* of credit for the help you provide. I've read numerous posts where someone has a problem and you've had the exact answer for them. It seems like you go that extra step to understand the problem, do some diligent research and experimenting, and then have the solution, with appropriate URLs, file versions, etc.

There, how's that for feedback?
