Re- MAC ing an SB2100D cable MODEM
lbyard Feb-12-01 05:38 PM
I always thought that my SB2100D external MODEM more or less married itself to the Ethernet MAC address of the original network adapter I had in my computer when the cable was installed by my ISP. I read somewhere that if I turned-off the MODEM for about 24-hours, it would then marry itself to a new card/MAC address. For that reason I set my SMC Barricade router (http://duxcw.com/digest/Reviews/Network/smc/smc7004br/smc7004br.htm) to clone the MAC address of my network adapter. It turns out that I wasnít patient enough. Just turn off and completely disconnect the cable MODEM for a few minutes to allow everything to decay, etc., connect the device with the new MAC address, reconnect the cable MODEM, wait a few minutes longer, and everything should work. You may have to power-cycle the router, the PCs connected to it, Start, Run, winipcfg, and release and renew the IP address leases on the PCs. I donít know if this will work with all cable systems.
