SMC7004BR barricade Router
jonesy Jan-06-01 00:24 AM
I'm thinking of getting the SMC Barricade 7004BR router. does anyone know of this particular machine? Is it all that I need? Do I need to also get a hub to network and share verizon DSL?I have a imac 333mhz & a ibook 366mhz that I want to combine.Do I just have to get the extra length ethernet cable to do a hook up.I believe It comes with shorter cables to do a standard connect. Please does anybody know that can give a straight foward answer without getting off the track in their response? This is starting to get complicated what with routers, hubs and everything else.Comp USA wants $199. for it while the Mac Mall wants $138. thanks, chris.......

Does anyone know of this particular machine? Yes, I have one. Works great. See
http://duxcw.com/digest/Reviews/Network/smc/smc7004br/smc7004br.htm. Several other readers have indicated that they have bought one.

Is it all that I need? I think so, except, You may need more or longer cables. It comes with two 20-foot cables. I have not played with the Apple computers.

Do I need to also get a hub to network and share verizon DSL? No.

Comp USA wants $199. for it while the Mac Mall wants $138. Search this Forum. Iíve seen a couple of reports from readers who got them for about $100, but that may have included a $30 rebate. Larry

Here's a review of the Barricade that gives some details on its features and setup:
http://www.8wire.com/articles/index.asp?AID=1354

The Barricade acts as a hub/switch (to connect multiple computers) as well as a DSL router; you just need to make sure file/print sharing is "on" on all computers that you want to network. It will work with your Macs (it connect my iMac with my company's Win2K laptop). You should definitely get a longer cable (or two) if you need to cover any real distance.
