Network Printing
Bedon Dec-12-00 08:25 PM
First of all thanks Larry for a great site!! I just discovered it and have found it extremely helpful. I have actually rewired my network because I found from your site that pins 3 and 6 on my RJ-45 were not a pair, and my network was actually slow. So thanks for your help!

Well my question now it this. I have 2 PCs networked back-to-back, and had been running them for a few months. Now I reformatted one of them and installed WinME, the other is running Win98SE. With the new cable it's working fine, (about 110Mb in 55secs), but I cannot print from the client. The host, running ME prints OK, but when I try to print from the client I get an error message(window labelled EPDSLR4.exe) like "Epson Stylus color is not installed on \\...", and then another window labelled Epson Spool Manager saying "Cannot start despooler - excutable may be corrupt" I tried reinstalling several times on both PCs but nothing worked. Can you help me please? I've given up, cannot think of anything else to do.
Thanks and Regards

Are you using Epson or Windows drivers? Which Epson printer do you have?

“IF THE HOST WORKSTATION IS RUNNING WINDOWS 98 / 95:
If your printer is either an Epson Stylus Color 850, Color 740, Color 640, Color 440, Stylus Photo 700 or Stylus Photo EX, skip steps 2-8.
1. Install the driver through the SETUP.EXE file on the bundled floppies or CD-ROM. If you wish to obtain the latest version of the driver, you can check our web site at http://www.epson.com/support/ftp.shtml and download the appropriate driver file. To install a downloaded file, simply double-click on it to start the installation process.
2. On the local drive of this terminal, create a directory by the name of EPSPOOL, so you have C:\EPSPOOL.
3. Click on 'Start' 'Programs' 'Epson’ ‘Spool Manager'.
4. In the Epson Spool Manager, click on 'Options' 'Default Spool Directory' and change the directory to C:\EPSPOOL. Click on 'Okay'.
5. In the Epson Spool Manager, click on ‘Queue’ ‘Setup’.
6. Select 'Spool to local printer'.
7. Ensure that the ‘Spool Directory’ is set to C:\EPSPOOL.
8. Close the ‘Epson Spool Manager’. “

“IF THE REMOTE WORKSTATION IS RUNNING WINDOWS 98 / 95:
If your printer is either an Epson Stylus Color 850, Color 740, Color 640, Color 440, Stylus Photo 700 or Stylus Photo EX, skip steps 11-18.
1. Install the driver through the SETUP.EXE file on the bundled floppies or CD-ROM. If you wish to obtain the latest version of the driver, you can check the File Library section for your product. To install a downloaded file, simply double-click on it to start the installation process.
2. Double-click on the ‘Network neighborhood’ icon and then locate and double-click the computer that has the printer connected to it.
3. You should now see the printer name that you had assigned in step #16.
4. Right-click on the icon of the printer and left-click on ‘Capture Printer Port’. Select a non-existent port such as ‘LPT5’ and also place a check mark on 'Reconnect at Logon'. Click on 'Okay'.
5. Close all open windows.
6. Click on ‘Start’ ‘Settings’ ‘Printers’.
7. Right-click on the icon of the printer and left-click on ‘Properties’.
8. Click on the ‘Details’ tab.
9. Under ‘Print to the following port’, select the port that you had captured in step #4, in this case LPT5. Click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘Okay’.
10. Close all open windows.
11. On the local drive of this terminal, create a directory by the name of EPSPOOL, so you have C:\EPSPOOL.
12. Click on 'Start' 'Programs' 'Epson’ ‘Spool Manager'.
13. In the Epson Spool Manager, click on 'Options' 'Default Spool Directory' and change the directory to C:\EPSPOOL. Click on 'Okay'.
14. In the Epson Spool Manager, click on ‘Queue’ ‘Setup’.
15. Select 'Spool to local printer'.
16. Ensure that the ‘Spool Directory’ is set to C:\EPSPOOL.
17. Enable ‘Use Print Manager for this port’ and click on ‘Okay’.
18. Close the ‘Epson Spool Manager’.
19. Print a test page.”
