Protocol Speed
fireball Apr-16-00 11:59 PM
Initially I set up a peer to peer network using NetBEUI and file transfer was FAST! I then set up ICS and changed protocol to TCP/IP following instructions on this site. ICS worked OK, but file transfer between the PC's slowed down to a crawl (modem speed?). Did I miss something? Host is Win 98 and client PC is Win 95B and I use a 56K modem with my ISP. To use two player games on this simple LAN, I need either TCP/IP or IPX/SPX.

Thanks for any advice

If you share a drive on a computer than map the shared drive on the same computer, you will see that sort of problem. Larry

No shared drives have been mapped yet. I was transfering files with the NetBEUI protocol using Explorer and Network Neighborhood. The slow down happened when NetBEUI was removed and replaced with TCP/IP and ICS was installed. Should I try binding IPX/SPX to my adapter card and removing TCP/IP? I only need TCP/IP for the dial-up adapter and Internet connection.

Thanks,

Ken

You need TCP/IP on the LAN/client(s) to share the Internet connection. I would remove IPX/SPX until you have the rest operating correctly. After removing IPX/SPX, do your network configurations look like http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/win98se/gateway.htm and http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/win98se/client.htm? Larry
