I also have a ISDN and have a default gateway installed on the TCP/IP protocole for that but i have file and printer sharing set up for the netbeui protocole.

when i installed it everything was fine, but now somtime the computers dont show each other in the network nabourhood. it has been happening more and more and now they never show each other.
However if i search for computer by name and put in a star i can find them all. and i can always ping them fine.

Please define "sometimes." Is this occurring right after the computers are turned on (first 15 minutes or so)? See http://duxcw.com/faq/network/bm.htm for enlightenment. Larry

Windows Me does not have a Network Neighborhood per se. It's called My Network Places. Do they appear in Entire Network in My Network Place? If so, that is where they should appear in Windows Me and the problem is not a problem. If not, do you have something shared? Also, http://duxcw.com/faq/network/brreq.htm and http://duxcw.com/faq/network/names.htm list things that should be checked. If they check, the problem could be this: http://duxcw.com/faq/network/browsenet.htm. Larry

OK sorry this may be a repeat post im not sure i clicked submit before my computer locked up.

So if i chagne from using netbeui to TCP/IP will i have a problem with hackers.
I have an ISDN router(D link DL308) It is on all the time so i am worried about hackers.

  • The router is running dynamicNAPT is this the same as NAT?
  • is it better or worse and why than NAT?
  • The router has built in filters is this similar to a firwall?
  • Do i need a wirefall?
  • If i should it be hardware or software?
  • Is hard drive passwords enought protection?

sorry for so many question but Any help or advice would be a great help as im a bit new to this.

Thanks for your help
Tony.

p.s. if this is a repeat post sorry.
p.p.s will tcp/ip be better if i get a new computer on xp in a few months?

The router/NAT should do a good job of protecting you network. It's all I have been using for years. Larry

is dynamicNAPT the same as NAT?

Is it theorticly possible for a hacker to find a way in with out installing software on my computer first?
