Running 10baseT and Telephone on same 4 pair?
storrence Apr-05-02 06:40 AM
My house is using http://www.greyfox.com/

The telephone line is using cat5 4 pair standard wire so I have 8 wires. My understanding is that telephone uses 2 wires and 10baseT networking uses 4 wires (really 2 but doubling each signal).

But I am told you can't mix different network types on the same cat5 cable? I'm sure it would work but perhaps I would have performance issues. The telephone is also carrying a DSL signal. Would having the telephone and networking on this single cat5 have crosstalk problems? Of course I would wire it like it's described on this site and then use 1 of the unused pairs to carry the dsl/telephone line.

Would this work or should I run another cat5 just for the networking?

I have to make a decision on this today so if someone has some advice on this I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Steve

You would have some performance issues indeed, If it were me I would run to different runs of Cat 5. Besides that how do you plan on getting the 2 pair to another connector? Like I said just run you 2 separate cat 5 cables , it would be easier anyways.

Really four, balanced voltage (http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable4.htm).

Probably, especially if the line rings (like a telephone); but I have not done it and do not have DSL. If it did work at 10 MHZ, it probably won’t at 100 MHZ. Also, you would probably need a 110 block to split-out the pairs. The ends of a twisted pair should not be untwisted more than ˝ inch. I would run another line. Let us know if you try to put it on one line, OK. Larry

Well it looks like it's best to run another cable so that is what I will do. Thanks for the help. It's the first time I've been on this forum but now I will be here more often
