This one has me stunned. I'm working on a client's Pc with Windows 95. I terminated all applications except Explorer. No Anti Virus, no TSR's. The PC WILL NOT SHUT DOWN using the Start, Shut Down, option. YOu must pull the plug to shut down. It appears to initiate shut down, by the wallpaper dimming, but like the Ever Ready bunny, it keeps on ticking. Even Ctrl, Alt, Del will not shut off this bunny. I installed and ran Norton AV, and Win Doctor to fix some errors. But because of the improper shut down (It runs Scandisk on every cold boot) no settings are ever retained. Scan disk never completes because it keeps restarting. I'm ready to do a clean reinstall of the OS. Any fore thoughts?
Thanks Larry for the great job.

A sound card not working is often the cause of a shutdown problem. Windows cannot play its good-bye jingle. Many other things can cause it. See How to Troubleshoot Windows 95 Shutdown Problems (Q145926) at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q145926. Shutdown problems can be rather time-consuming to troubleshoot. Doing a clean install may not fix it. Do scandisk from the DOS prompt or Safe Mode. Something is probably running in the normal mode and changing the hard disk. A screensaver could be causing both problems. Larry

Thank you Larry. I did not consider the sound card. I'll review the link you provided. I resorted to using the OS recover option on the customer's restore CD. This alowed me to keep all data files and I only had to reinstall some applications over the old ones. It worked.
