SMC7004ABR on NTL not allowing net access
distortal Mar-27-02 11:26 AM
I originally had a BR that I accidently locked and had to return, this ABR works fine as a switch but I cannot get it to see my cable modem - a Motorola SB4100. The WAN light blinks in time with the Activity light on the CM when there's activity, but I cannot ping any IP on the net.

I changed the Router IP to 192.168.0.1 so that it would fit into my home LAN as the previous one had, I can access the config pages and have cloned both my NIC MAC and the CM Mac, with no success. I'm all out of ideas and still waiting for SMC support to get back to me.

My laptop is 192.168.0.181 and I've set the default gateway and everything else to look at the router.

I used to use the cable modem through its USB, not the RJ45 - don't know if this makes any difference. Also, the original BR took about two hours to get working and I have no idea why it finally decided to. A friend of a friend says SMC mentioned a mistake in the manual, but I don't know if this is for the BR or the ABR.

Anyone had a similar problem? Is there a solution?

Sure it does. Try power cycling the MODEM several times. Call your service provider. they may have to reset it. Larry

I've been recycling the modem for the best part of two hours now, leaving it off for up to 30 minutes at a time, and still no luck - everything remains exactly the same. Is there any way to hard-reset the modem itself? Would this cause any probs with my ISP?

No, don't wait 30 minutes. Let it just let initialize, blinking a few times. I have a devil of a time getting mine to do it, but I've done it at least twice to get it to marry to another MAC address. However, I have an SB2100D and it does not have a USB interface. One can always hard reset one of these things that ##### energy from a wall socket by pulling the plug or unplugging where the adapter plugs into the MODEM. I know, I'm mean, but you won't forget it. Thanks for the advice Larry, in the end I unplugged it and left it overnight without power - it fired up and connected to the router on the first try this morning, and the wife was surfing the net and grabbing her spam email before I'd even set off for work
