Usually we need only one Tx pair and one Rx pair. Why are there 4 pairs inside CAT 5? Are the other 2 pairs wasted? Or 2 pairs are used for TX and 2 pairs are used for Rx?

Yes. They are not used for 100BASE-TX or 10BASET. Other standards (e.g., 100BASE-T4 and 1000BASE-T) use them. Larry
