Win98 and Win XP Network
jashmore Dec-23-01 07:02 PM
I am attempting to network two PC's via a router and need some basic setup information. Here is my setup:

Cable modem into a Linksys router
One machine Win98 (name = "GATEWAY")
One machine WinXP (name = "ABSSYSTEM)
Both workgroups = "MSHOME"
Both running TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
I have shared out the C drive on both folders.

The XP machine can "see" the Win98 machine but the Win98 cannot "see" the XP machine. However, the XP machine cannot access the WIN98 machine.

Is there a "networking basics" that would help me with this particular problem?

I turned off the XP firewall and all of a sudden the computers see each other and can share files/resources....

Simple stuff like that affects everything!

I have the same problem with a D-Link DL-704P router.
How do you turn off the XP firewall;
Don't you need the XP firewall???
Thanks.

No. You probably don’t need it either. It most likely is not better or as good as the router’s security features. http://www.dlink.com/products/broadband/di704p/:

“The DI-704P provides two levels of security support. First, it masks the IP addresses of computers within the local network from the Internet, thus making it more difficult for a hacker to target a specific computer within the local network. Secondly, it can block and redirect certain ports to limit the services that outside users can access.”

To enable or disable the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall, Click Start, Control Panel, double–click Network Connections, select the Internet connection, Network Tasks, Change settings of this connection, Advanced tab, Internet Connection Firewall, uncheck or check the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
