Hope someone can help!!
merc999 Oct-30-01 12:58 PM
Hi everyone

I really hope someone can help me. I'm trying to get my 2 pcs to internet share. Both systems have win98SE installed on them, and i have made the stronger one the host. Now for some reason i've done everything and double checked everything 10 times now, (and mind you, i have done this before on 2 other computers with dial up connection and that worked fine). I now have cable connection, and for some reason this is what i get when i've installed everything.

- When i do a winipcfg on the host and get the IP and put it in the client to ping the host i get REQUEST TIMED OUT.

- In the client computer when i do a winipcfg it shows on top where the host name is THE NAME OF MY CLIENT COMPUTER

- However i have installed file sharing and HAVE NO PROBLEM seeing each other's files on each computer!

- The client cannot access web pages or connect to any online game.
(ultima Online if anyone is curious to know what game i tested and EverQuest)

PLEASE anyone, any ideas or suggestions on troubleshooting this please don't hold back, i'd be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Would love to get both these computers online without going through ##### and BACK!

The host has to be turned-on first. It may take 15 minutes for the two computers to sort things out the first time. The IP address should be set to automatic on the client TCP/Ip properties. It should have been assigned 192.168.0.1 to the TCP/IP properties associated with the network adapter going to the client. Both Link LEDs should be on solid. Use winipcfg to release and renew the IP on the client before pinging (192.168.01.1). You should see it change. ICS may have the home and shared adapters backwards on the host. Hope that helps. If not, please come back. Larry

Hi Larry thanks for replying

I tried what you sugested..

Host PC was switched on first,
NIC cards both had led lights solid
file sharing OK
all NICs were set to automatic IP config
did a release and a renew on the host nic in winipcfg.
still client cannot connect to internet

this is the WINIPCFG on the -
HOST adapters are as follows
1.ICSHARE Adapter (My main NIC connected to internet)Has an IP address set by ISP i think
2.NIC Adapter (connected to client via crossover cable)
This guy is set to auto IP config adress 169.254.200.92
3.PPP Adapter

The CLIENT adapter only has one
1.NIC(connected to crossover cable to host NIC)

Thats all i have now gotta hit sack long days ahead

Thanks for anything you can come up with

As I stated in my last post, TCP/IP for this adapter should not be set to automatic. When ICS is installed(?), it should give it a static IP of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

Ok I have now set the host computer's NIC to static IP of -
192.168.0.1 with a subnet mask of -
255.255.255.0

However what do i need to set as the IP on the Client's NIC?
This NIC was also assigned an auto IP config of a similar address as what the host's IP was ...
169.254.244.56 and a subnet 255.255.0.0 DO i have to assign this IP static also?

Thanks, by the way I'm Andrew : )

Sorry,

I should also let you know i did a reinstall of everything today and installed Windos ME on the host computer and win98SE on the client computer.

Everything turned out ok again
-Can share folders
-The client CAN NOW ping the host with IP address of 192.168.0.1
-The client CANNOT still open a web browser of connect to the internet.

I guess it's ga good sign that the client can actually ping the host now...

ok i'll be back if i can come up with anything else )

regards Andrew

YES IT WORKED. IT SEEMS THAT AFTER SETTING THE IP ADDRESS TO A STATIC ONE OF 192.168.0.1 THE CLIENT RECOGNIZED THIS AFTER A REBOOT, AND I CAN NOW OPEN A WEBPAGE ON IT. SO FAR EVERYTHING SEEMS GOOD.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE LARRY I REALLY APPRECIATED IT. YOUR A CHAMP!

ANDREW
