ICS and Outlook
CSL Sep-07-01 05:10 PM
We have Earthlink satellite internet. I have configured our small 4 pc network to use ICS to share the internet. This works, however, we cannot access our mail through outlook on the client PC's. It does work on the server PC and I have checked that the settings are the same on the client pcs. Any ideas?

See mskb 291643, OL2002: Error Message (0x800CCC0D) When You Use an ICS Connection, at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q291/6/43.ASP

“SYMPTOMS
When you send or receive messages on an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) client, the following error message may occur:

Thanks Larry,
I have tried this, but am having difficulty in establishing the fully qualified domain name. I think it is swan.mail.pas.earthlink.net (taken from a mail header) but it does not appear to work. - or do they want the IP address?

Larry,

I put in the IP and have got a stage further, when I check for messages, outlook establishes a network connection, finds the incoming and outgoing servers but fails on the logon and send test message. I have been looking at this for so long now, I am probably overlooking something really simple!

Task 'pop.earthlink.net - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

before ,it could not find the server.
hope you can help

Try putting a dot at the end of swan.mail.pas.earthlink.net, like so:

swan.mail.pas.earthlink.net.

The other problem looks like a DNS server connection problem. That could happen if you are using Static IP addresses for your clients. It can also happen if you are not. Try enabling DNS on the clients and entering the IP addresses of the service provider’s DNS servers. Larry

Thanks Larry,

I tried the dot - but no luck. I also added the isp DNS to the client pc but still no luck! It is so frustrating when the internet works but mail dosn't! If you have any other thoughts or ideas on this , it would really be appreciated.
Thanks
Cath

Just sent you an E-Mail with the following:

"Double click this message, Choose View, Options, highlight the stuff in the Internet headers box, press Ctrl-C to copy it to the clipboard, reply to this message, and press Ctrl-V to past a copy of it in the message, and send it to me. The info might help; I don't know for sure. Larry"
