ICS question
marty1mc Jun-17-00 02:23 AM
I have a simple 2 computer network running with NetBEUI and using AOL for my internet connection. I have installed ICS on my host computer. How do I connect to the internet with the other computer?

I can get to the internet through AOL (not a simple task after TCP/IP installed itself and screwed up the AOL adapter!) I am not running TCP/IP on either machine since AOL will not work with it installed.

Thanks alot.

Marty

You must run TCP/IP to share an Internet connection. If you are using AOL 5.0 and a cable MODEM, DSL, etc. the problem is that this combination creates five network adapters:
Dial-up
AOL dial-up
AOL adapter
Network adapter to CM
Network adpater for LAN
That is one more than the Windows 9X max of 4 adapters. This is not a problem on the clients.
According to Sybergen, SyGate (http://duxcw.com/digest/Reviews/Network/sygate/sygate.htm) will work with AOL 5.X. Suggest downloading it. Larry

Thanks Larry. I didn't know about the max amount of adapters supported by win 9x. Even Microsoft said that it was a problem with TCP/IP binding to the wrong adapter (Dialup for AOL instead of the AOL adapter). They suggested blowing away the entire AOL configuration and allowing AOL to reconfigure or to remove the dialup adapter before adding TCP/IP to ensure binding. Needless to say, neither worked. I will try your suggestion...Thanks again
