Unimpressed with Linksys Wireless
Peace Jul-07-01 06:40 PM
Hi...I wanted to post my results after my last post requesting info about Wireless options for a small network.....We used the Linksys model BEFW11S4(Available locally)hub\router\wirless,
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=173&grid=5
It wouldn't even reach 70 ft through 2 walls. When asked with the question, the Linksys Tech said" I know it is a problem with distance..... DOH!!!!!! How pathetic!!!!!! We brought the computer in closer about 10 ft and it worked fine...it seemed to crap out at about 30 ft.....I am so disappointed.....Can anyone with Wirless experience please tell me if the Dlink or SMC either one will definitely reach at least 80-100 ft and through 2 exterior walls??

THANX in ADVANCE!!!

Peace

What are the walls made of? Reinforced concrete? Roughly how thick are they? Are there any windows in them? Do they have insulation with a layer reflective metal foil? A lot of materials can block high frequency radio waves. Larry

Hi and thanx for the response, Larry. One of the walls are made of Wood Studs wit Stucco, the other is simply wood studs and wood siding. One wall has a window in it.........

Good point about the insulation. My guess would definitely be that they have the Standard Thermo-ply type with that foil layer on it......If that is true.....then my only options may be to run wire, eh?

Stucco usually has wire mesh under it and may have a layer of foam board insulation with foil on the outside it under the mesh. Either or together may be acting as a faraday cage and blocking radiation even at (what is it?) 2.something GHz. Spread spectrum technology, which wireless LANs use, has an utterly amazing capability to pull a signal out of noise (although I went through mathematics that make it work a long time ago, I still call it magic), but it canít pull nothing out of noise. Please read http://duxcw.com/faq/network/outside.htm before running cable. Cable How to is here: http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable1.htm. I am working on an article with pictures on doing wall jacks that should be done next week. Larry
