Compact Privacy Policy

Hi Larry,

I've been reading over your page out the problems you had with IE 6.0 and 3rd Party cookies. Well, our site is currently having the same problem!

I've been going crazy trying to find a solution and it sounds like it was the exact problem you were having.

The reference page you made was very useful, however, I'm still having problems getting the browser or Apache to pick up the info in the .htaccess file.

We are running Apache 1.3.26 and I've created a .htaccess file with this line:
header append P3P 'CP="NOI CURa ADMa DEVa TAIa OUR BUS IND UNI COM NAV INT TST"'

So far, I've added the .htaccess file to almost every directory you can imagine in APache and Tomcat.

I guess I'm just wondering, what did you do with the .htaccess file once you created it? Did you have to make and changes to httpd.conf?

Thank you very much for your time and any input.

Mark

I put it in the directory where the user goes to read my forum pages; where the pages are located that apllies cookies. .htaccess is hiarachial. So, you could put it in the root directory if there are not more .htaccess files that will modeify the header in subdirectories. I am no expert on .htaccess... I believe I recall that the http suff should be at the top, but I'm not sure. Of course, those funny codes have to be right to get the desired reults. You can check whether it is not as described in the FAQ. I've got more words to add to the FAWQ and may make it an article; but no time to do it now. I do not beleive I have anymore on what you are trying to accomplish. I found you have to know what you are doing, as boring as it is.

my http looks like this

header append P3P 'CP="CAO DSP COR CURa ADMa DEVa OUR IND PHY ONL UNI COM NAV INT DEM PRE"'

Just copied it from the acutal file that works. Larry

No. I don't have control over it. I use a hosting service. Larry

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

Yeah, this whole thing is driving me crazy, it seems simple enough, but I'm having a bugger of a time getting it to work correctly.

Thanks again and I guess I just need to buckle down and keep playing with it.

Sorry to bug you but I just need to ask a couple more questions...we are actually about to lose a customer if I can't get this figured out.

1) What are you using as an application server?

2) Did you have to add anything else to the .htaccess file besides?

header append P3P 'CP="CAO DSP COR CURa ADMa DEVa OUR IND PHY ONL UNI COM NAV INT DEM PRE"'

3) You just dropped one copy in the directory that you wanted it to cover?

4) Do you need to set it up in the IBM Policy Editor or should the "header append" append whatever is in the ""?

5) Did you have this much trouble???

Thank you very much.

Iím not using an application server. Just MySGL, php, and Perl on FreeBSD with Apache. I have them in two directories. One is running Perl, this forum. It is the program I was having a cookie problem with. What I did fixed it.

>2) Did you have to add anything else to the .htaccess file besides? header append P3P 'CP="CAO DSP COR CURa ADMa DEVa OUR IND PHY ONL UNI COM NAV INT DEM PRE"'

No.

>3) You just dropped one copy in the directory that you wanted it to cover?

Yes.

>4) Do you need to set it up in the IBM Policy Editor or should the "header append" append whatever is in the ""?

I do not know what you are talking about. I used the policy editor to generate the compact policy, it put it in a text file, and I used a text editor to put it in .htaccess. The .htaccess file does the header append. You can verify that it is working (producing the header info in http requests) by following the FAQ.

>5) Did you have this much trouble???

Yes, as stated in the FAQ, it took a lot of my time.

I do not see where the answers to these questions have provided any more information than I have already provided. You must be a lawyer. Larry

Just so you know, there is more to it than just dropping a .htaccess file in a directory. There were several changes that had to take place in Apache's httpd.conf file to get Apache to even recognize a .htaccess file. How you mananged to do this without configuring Apache remains a mystery?

Now Apache is recognizing the file, however I'm running my applications through Tomcat and this is where I'm having all the problems. So i guess i can see where asking you what app. server you're running your stuff on was way off base.
