Partitioned hard drive that does not work
LyH Jan-24-02 07:52 AM
I had windows 2000 on my computer then I partitioned the hard drive to put windows XP on it. Now when I start up, it asks me whether I would like to use 2000 or XP. When I choose XP, it works fine, but 2000 has problems. It starts up as usual, but couple minutes into it, the screen goes blank and the computer restarts and goes back to the screen where it asks me which I would like to use. What seems to be the problem with the windows 2000? I would like to delete both windows and install another version of windows I have. I don't know how to do that. my friend suggested formatting the computer. I don't knwo how to do that. I'm an amateur at computers and wondered if you can tell me what to do. Please help.

I donít know what you used to partition the hard disk drive. I would use a Windows 98 Startup floppy (http://duxcw.com/digest/Fromshop/software/windows/startup/startup.htm) and fdisk to remove all partitions on the drive. I would then create new partitions and format them just like in a Windows 98 clean install (http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/upgrade/fdisk.htm). I would then install Windows XP per http://duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/clean.htm or http://duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/oeminst.htm. Yes, I would install XP. Larry
