email peeping tom?
mjdem Dec-04-01 05:29 PM
If anyone can help, any help and/or suggestions would be appreciated. My sister has a Dell hooked up to a phone modem. She uses Hotmail as her email account. All her emails get deleted after she sends them, and incoming emails get deleted after she reads them. Nothing is saved. She doesn't keep an address book of email contacts. Strangely enough, I sent her an email from my new email account and she got a call that night from her X Psyco Boyfriend wondering who I was (stating my email name) and to never mind how he knew about it. That he has many connections in the computer world. Her password has been changed a few times since they split 6 months ago, and she said the password is very unique, nothing he could figure out. He did know my email name. But she doesn't save email names anyways. She memorizes them. How can she be protected, and how is he doing this. Thanks.

Larry, nice to talk to you again, it's been a while. The room being bugged, that's what I was thinking. She lives in a small one bedroom apartment building. She says she never said my email out loud, so it couldn't have been on tape or picked up verbally. I also asked if he had a key to the apartment. She said no. She does travel alot, so having time to set something up would be possible. He even knew what state I was from, so I think he read the email. She said she got it, read it, and deleted it right away. I think she will go to the police. He has hinted towards this "sudden knowledge" before. Is is possible he has installed a program in her computer collecting information for him? Just curious if this is something that can be detected and eliminated. Thanks again for your help.

I was thinking of a very small video camera. How about a peephole from an adjoining apartment? There may a program that is resending received mail, but I am no expert on that. It could be someone knows someone working for the place that receives the mail. Someone could be breaking-in and getting it off the hard disk even though it has been erased. I could probably do that (get it off the drive, not break-in). Or you could be bugged. Or the whole thing could be a fabrication (I would think that would be a consideration by anyone investigating). Ive heard of programs that will monitor what you are doing on your comp....the ones that allow parents to spy on there kids surfing would be usefull if you were a phsyco ex boyfriend..all he would have to do is install it before they split up.
Allso ...and im not too sure about the correct terminology here but some virus's let other people take control of your comp...so all he would have to do is wait until she came online and then watch to see what she was doing......oh yea and all he would have to do is change the virus just a litle bit so that the virus scanner wouldnt recognise it Programs that allow you to infect other peoples computers are freely available on the net...also programs that allow you to change virus's are very easy to use .
wipe the hard drive and then still see whether he knows whats happening.

"Right now, your boss, your spouse or the government could secretly be reading all your typed words even the ones you deleted while surreptitiously snapping your picture..." More on Spyware. Larry
