Images not showing in Normal View of FP2000...Help
vplilly Oct-10-01 06:42 PM
I am trying to figure out what would cause FP2000 to stop showing all images in the Normal View layout screen. It works fine in preview & in the browser, but something seems corrupt with software. The MS site has a similar problem stated about naming the images, but this is not the problem.

I re-installed FP 2000, because it does not appear to be a web related issue, other computers running FP2000 can open the site, and show the images fine. Is there something in the Registry?? Please let me know if you can help me... Thanks, Paul

Have your tried refreshing the view? Does the computer have a different version of the browser installed; e.g., IE 6.0? I have image display problems with IE 6.0 as compare to 5.5 and I do not know if it could be related. I have not seen the problem and I used FP 2000 for about two years, but most web work was on a local drive. I am now using 2002. Larry

Larry,
Thank you for the quick response. To answer your question on the browser, both computers are running I.E. 5.5 sp2. The third computer I use with I.E. 6 & FP 2002 is fine as well.

I do Intranet & Internet development, and this problem has begun to affect at least a dozen people on our Intranet.

I've been using FP for about four years, and I have never seen this problem. I think it may be a curruption of FP that can be transfered from web to web when editing a site, but I can not confirm this, And a different computer I use, opens the site fine without getting corrupted... I am really stumped.

My next step is to remove all of Office2K, and re-install it. I guess the next step would be format c:.. Thanks for your input ..
Paul

Larry,
Thank you for helping me out on this problem. I finally found out the problem, I just need to work on the fix.

The thing that was the most deceptive in trouble shooting was the two computers that appeared to be working. They were working because they had the images cached on their local hardrives.

I am not sure how everthing is working execept the images, but the problem is the the IT Dept put filters on port 80 after the Code Red & Nimda worm hit. Everything seemed fine to me as far as web authoring, and I must have cleared my cache when the image preview had stopped working.

I checked the other computers and they appeared to be working fine, which made me belive it was a client issue, when in fact I had no control over the filter IT had put into place.

I think this is a classic example of how two departments in a large corporation can not communicate the impacts or implementation of port filtering (IT and local Automation).

Anyway,
I wanted to comment that I have really enjoyed using this forum, and I plan to share this info with my fellow developers. Thank you for helping me out.
Paul

I thought there was a way of turning off images and replacing them with markers in FP, but could not find it the other day in FP 2002. It may have been a feature in older versions. Larry

I will investigate the markers... Thank you for the sugestion. Whatever setting\problem, my FP2K had, went with the upgrade to Office XP.

One other interesting thing, All the images in the MS Theme, which would be cached on my hard drive are appearing fine in normal view. The only images that are not showing are on the Intranet web site.

Also, If I open a web that is on my computer, the images are also appearing. The problem definitely seems to be viewing the images that reside on the remote web. I may have to see if the "Normal View" in FP uses a cache, and the Preview mode, uses the remote image.

Another bad thing, My FP2k install on my second PC, has now seemed to catch the problem, and is no longer showing images in the normal view. Now I am going to hate creating image maps unless this problem is resolved.

Is there a way to escalate problems to Micosoft without getting charged?

Image downloads may be timing-out. I would contact administrator of/tech support for the remote server. Larry

The web usually loads in a few seconds (right after authentication) since the remote server is still on the LAN. My laptop FP2002 install is still working, and it even works from home through the VPN, so I don't believe there are any timeout issues. I am the server admin, and I am trying to research what the problems could be. Thank you for helping me out with this problem.

I have a little more information that may raise a few more questions\ideas. When I log in to an Intranet site, I get two prompts for authenication. After the first time authentication is succeful, the web begins to load, with visible html & table layout. Images are not appearing until after the second authentication box, then the images load (or don't load depending on if that FP install is corrupt.) The second popup has been going on for quite some time, I believe it has been in exsistance since the newer versions of the server extensions were installed over six months ago.

I still don't believe this problem is server related, because I had two out of three computers working fine. And this is a problem which is appearing to spread.

It almost reminds me of how theme corruption can occur, but I would like to know how Frontpage is getting changed. It does seem to get settings from somewhere.

Since I administer and help over a hundred web site owners, it is possible that only a few sites are causing this corruption, and since I travel through alot of them, I am easily infected.

I know there are at least a dozen others, maybe more that have this same problem at my company. I may have to get Microsoft involved.

Thank you Larry for your continued support and suggestions. I will forward this disscussion thread to people to see if we can get this problem corrected, and hope this isn't something that is a bug which will go after more people.
Paul
